What Do Authors Do A humorous but very informative look at the various ways that authors work distills the whole process and presents it in a lively format that will attract and intrigue. Two authors witness the same event, and while one is turning that event into a chapter book, the other prepares a picture book. The cartoon illustrations provide just the right expressions, tension, and attitude to further the story.

Working With Wildlife - A Guide to Careers in the Animal World (Science, College and Career Guidance) When young people begin to explore careers in the world of wildlife, this might be the best primer available. In Maynard's first step into exploring an exciting career working with wildlife, he has provided a comprehensive picture of just what that means. Through examples of researchers in Africa to wildlife rehabilitators in Ohio, Maynard gives young readers a glimpse into the diversity of opportunities out there. Working with Wildlife is a great addition to career guides for young people and should be on the shelf in every school library. It is exciting to read because of the numerous real world examples of conservationists, researchers, zoo professionals, and educators and the dramatic color photographs. Maynard's writing style is passionate and positive, generating enthusiasm for wildlife careers and encouraging readers to pursue their interests.

I Want to Be a Chef An engaging text, a dynamic design, and photographs featuring chefs and would-be chefs of many ethnicities and both genders characterize this exploration of what it takes to become a master cook; however, the random organization of the material makes it less valuable than it could have been. Other sources of information on schools, magazines, and culinary organizations are appended.

The Totally Awesome Business Book for Kids - With Twenty Super Businesses You Can Start Right Now! This fun and fact-filled guide for ten- to seventeen-year-olds includes quizzes, games, cartoons, stories and all the information a young person needs to know about starting up a business, how much money can be made from it, and the steps to do the work--all in an easy-to-understand style. The book includes 10 business skills you need to know: speaking up for what you want, working with others--even parents, business budgets, record keeping, research and filing, telephoning, negotiating, using the telephone book, putting it in writing, marketing, advertising, publicity, and networking.

When I Grow Up When you grow up do you want to be adventurous? Maybe generous? How about confident? Or fair? In brightly colored collage illustrations filled with imaginative detail, artist Charise Mericle Harper celebrates some of the qualities most admired in people of all ages. Community Helpers from A to Z...
Reviewer: A Teacher

Community Helpers is an extremely reasonably priced book that is packed with interesting information about many careers. The photographs of workers, enhance the details given about each occupation. As a teacher I was pleased to read the clear descriptions of so many jobs packed into one book! I recommend this book for all children thinking about their future and for the adults that are helping them to do this.

The Berenstain Bears on the Job (First Time Readers) Dr. Gert Grizzly, Firebear Bob and Police Officer Marguerite are just a few of the workers Brother and Sister Bear meet in their informative and funny search to find out what they'll be when they grow up. Full-color illustrations.

Fireman Small After a long night's work, Fireman Small "closes the curtains, gets in bed / And pulls the covers over his head." But a series of disasters keeps him from getting his sleep. First, Farmer Pig's cat becomes caught in a magnolia tree; then, Little Bunny falls down a well; and finally, there's a fire at the bakery. Each time something happens, Fireman Small saves the day. This short, simple story will delight children with its action, rhyme, and sprightly illustrations. Yee's colorful watercolors depict the animal inhabitants of the cozy town as warm, friendly, and concerned for one another's welfare, and an illustration of the inside of the firehouse is beautifully rendered to show all the little details on the fire truck. The charming, colorful little book will be a good means of introducing the fire fighting profession: it shows firefighters doing other things besides putting out blazes. That may be a big surprise for some children.

How to Get a Job If You're a Teenager A basic job skills guide for teenagers with appendices of additional resources and web sites for job searches.

Odd Jobs Ellen Weiss has written an amazing book. The photographs are great too. This book teaches a lesson. You need not decide early in life what you want to do for the rest of your life. You can have an interesting, rewarding and enjoyable career if you follow your heart, your interests, your dreams.

Fire in Their Eyes - Wildfires and the People Who Fight Them In a profession that catches workers somewhere between daredevil and do-gooder, smokejumpers risk their lives to protect the wilderness. Beil profiles a handful of men and women, capturing the drama, excitement, and danger of their job, and describing the tools, methods, and training that help them do their work. Beil's own photographs reflect the roller coaster pace of the work--from the burly man sitting at a sewing machine, repairing his parachute, to a tree exploding in a column of fire.

I Want to Be an Astronaut Blast off into outer space with Byron Barton! Sleep in zero gravity, put on a space suit, help fix a satellite, and then come back to Earth. With lyrical text and glowing illustrations, this very satisfying story is sure to spark the imaginations of astronauts-to-be.

Harvey Hare, Postman Extraordinaire Like our own mail carriers, Harvey Hare delivers his letters and packages "no matter what the season, no matter what the weather." He brings letters from the town mouse to the country mouse, twigs to the sparrows, and spectacles to Mole, and he makes all his rounds despite soaking, freezing, and sweating, until his grateful animal friends agree to make him a wonderful present that will solve his weather problems. Next to today's glitzy picture books, Harvey--with his pink-lined floppy ears--and friends are sweetly old-fashioned. Watts evokes a pastoral world of charm and grace with a satisfying story that preschoolers will love.

A Police Officer That's What I'll Be! This is a story of a little boy who continues to need help after he climbs up a tree and wonders what he would be. The boy later realizes what he wants to be after being helped throughout the day by police officers Garcia, Roper and Smith.

A Teen's Guide to Finding a Job "This is a very well researched and easy to use tool that I feel will be of great assistance to any young person who is serious about success. The illustrations, format, guides, and exercises come together to make the book attractive as well as functional. This book should be in every school, library, and home.

Career Ideas for Kids Who Like Art The lack of money in the arts makes finding full-time art-related work tough; this book helps readers apply their skills to occupations that really exist by examining 15 different jobs in detail, among them, museum curator, chef, fashion designer, and industrial designer. The book opens with a lengthy 84-question quiz intended to help readers ascertain their field of interest. Each career entry contains interviews with people working in the field along with addresses. Readers are encouraged to go to the library and the Internet to continue their research, and there are also tips on setting up informational interviews with people working in artistic fields. A helpful browsing tool for students who want to think ahead to their post-school years.
